Midlands Tree Drawings 2012

These charcoal and white pastel drawings are part of the Midlands series and document the topiary trees that line the sides of the Midlands Highway between Tunbridge and Oatlands. Created from 1964 onwards by a council worker who worked on the them during his lunch hour, as a child it was always a cause for great excitement identifying each of these trees. Originally there was 120 of these topiary trees and only a small number remain today but they continue to delight travelers with their whimsy. The drawings also document the series of European trees that were planted along the Midlands Highway over a hundred years ago.
