The Midlands Garden
The Midlands, in the heartland of Tasmania, is a fragile landscape and summers represent that fact more than ever. This is the driest part of Tasmania and from an ecological perspective the Midlands have been severely fragmented and cleared for agriculture. The aim of this artwork is to illustrate the aridness of the protracted dry spells and the contrasting lush splendour of the domestic gardens at the colonial homesteads scattered throughout the Midlands.
The depiction of the disparity between the green and colourful abundance of the gardens and the dry, yellow landscape of the dusty plains symbolises the serious plight of Tasmania’s rural tree decline and the widespread erosion in the Midlands area.
